Nash – more than 100 years of vacuum pump history and technology
Industry News · 2026-10-08In paper factories, power plants or chemicals, many engineers commonly refer to fluid ring vacuum pumps as "Nash pumps".The name comes from Nash Engineering, a company associated with the history of water ring vacuum pump technology.
Nash was born and developed.
Nash Engineering was founded by Lewis H. Nash in 1905 in Connecticut, USA. In 1914, he was granted the "Pump and Air Compressor" patent, which was recognized as the first patent in the United States for liquid ring pumps and compressors. In 2002 Nash merged with Elmo Vacuum Technology (separated from Siemens) into Nash Elmo; in 2004 Gardner Denver acquired and established the Gardner Denver Nash division; in 2020 this division merged with Ingersoll Rand's industrial division.
Feet pumping without water.
The pump wing in the pump body provides a quantity of fluid, usually water. When rotating, the centrifugal force pushes the pressing fluid into the pump into a "liquid circle". Because the wing deviates from the ring, the volume of the gaps between the wings and the circle increases, when decreasing: prevents increased volume of air absorption, prevents reduced volume of air compression into the exhaust door. The fluid both closes the gap and absorbs the heat generated when compressed.
Why this technology has existed for more than a century
- There is no rubber metal in the compression chamber, should withstand moist gas, dirty gas and liquid droplets.
- Compressed close to equal heat, suitable for flammable gas.
- Simple structure, less wear detail, easy maintenance.
In turn, the thermal performance is usually lower than the dry pump, and the extreme vacuum is limited by the steam pressure of the ring liquid (about 32 mbar with water at 25 °C).

Frequently asked questions.
What is Nash Pump?
It is Nash’s vacuum pump and liquid ring compressor. In fact, many people use this name to refer to the common type of liquid ring pump.
Does the water-free vacuum pump otherwise pump the fluid ring?
The same principle. "water circle" is when the sealing liquid is water; "liquid circle" is the common name, even when using oil, solvent or acid.
