Water ring vacuum pumps, hammer wings and dry screwdrives: comparisons and how to choose
Industry News · 2026-08-10When vacuum is needed in industry, the three types of pumps are compared: fluid ring pumps, hose pumps (oil or dry) and dry screw pumps. There is no best type for every case; the answer depends on suction gas, vacuum level and total cost of life cycle.
Pumping the fluid.
Advantages: resistant to moist gas, dirty gas, liquid droplets and fine dust; near-temperature compression should be safe with flammable gas; less wear details, simple maintenance. Limits: thermal performance is usually lower than dry pump, extreme vacuum is limited by the vapor pressure of the fluid ring, and must supply, liquid processing sealing.
Dry pumping.
Advantages: No working fluid, high power performance, deep vacuum (under 0.01–0.1 mbar depending on type), dry suction gas easy to recover solvents. Limitations: high investment price, sensitive to solid particles, condensation and corrosive gases if there is no suitable protective and heating tank.
Closed oil pump.
For deep vacuum at a low price, but moist gas and solvents contaminate oil, it is necessary to replace oil and filter oil fog at the exhaust end.
How to choose quickly.
- A lot of steam, solvent steam, dirty gas or liquid droplets: prefer liquid ring pumping.
- Clean, dry, running continuously, expensive electricity, need a deep vacuum: dry screw pump.
- Small scale, clean gas, limited budget: oil pump with traps.
Do not forget the cost of life.
Electricity, water sealing, wastewater treatment, oil and maintenance workers must all be added to the comparison. A pump that is twice as expensive but saves electricity and water can still be reimbursed for several years when running three times.
Choices are often made by industry.
- Electricity, Paper and RoadMoist air, large flow, running continuously: vacuum pump water circle.
- Chemicals and lips:Multi-damp and corrosive gas: liquid ring pump (closed wire) or dry screw pump with suspension and heating.
- Medicine, semiconductor and clean room:Clean air, no oil pollution requirements: dry pump.
- Packaging and Laboratory:pumping or pumping.

Frequently asked questions.
Does a water-free foot pump cost water?
The one-time mode consumes a lot of water; the closed circuit with the refrigerator is almost water-free and easy to handle toxic gases.
Can I combine several types of pumps?
The common configuration is the front pressure pump and the rear liquid ring pump, or the ejector combines the liquid ring pump to reach deep vacuum at reasonable cost.
