Irrigation and floodproof pump stations have specific needs: large flow, low pressure column (usually a few meters) and seasonal work, sometimes running only a few hundred hours per year.

If the pump height is higher than the suction water level, a vacuum bearing system is needed; a pump placed lower than the water level (sink pump or steady axle pump) avoids this step. Starting multiple pumps at the same time must calculate the power grid’s starting current.
